September Is Healthy Aging Month

affordable home care, assisted home care, at home caregivers, companion home care, elder care in Minnesota, eldercare at home, elderly home assistance September is the annual Healthy Aging® Month when Americans nationwide are reminded to focus on the positive aspects of growing older and take personal responsibility for their health— physically, socially, mentally, or financially.  More than 15 years ago, the national health initiative, Healthy Aging®, was developed to provide people with helpful information for successful aging.

The Healthy Aging® group encourages people to reinvent themselves, take control of their health, and use September as the motivation to take stock of where they’ve been and consider what they really would like to do if money were no object.  If you care for older people, the following are tips to encourage the seniors in your life to continue the journey of healthy aging:

  • Go back to school. Many community centers and school districts offer inexpensive community education classes that will keep minds sharp and intellects engaged.  Churches and other spiritual communities also frequently offer studies.  Often, these organizations have classes specifically for seniors, which can also be a great way to meet other people their age.


  • Refresh purpose through volunteering. Everyone benefits from living with a sense of purpose, and the retirement years can be as purpose-driven as a person’s working years.  Nursing homes, adult day programs, churches, and schools are all great places to start in search of meaningful volunteer opportunities for seniors.


  • Initiate a financial makeover. Encourage them to make an appointment with their financial advisor or find one to walk through their current finances and long-range monetary plans.  Financial worries can be a source of great stress, which can inhibit healthy aging.


  • Get moving like there’s no tomorrow. Dancing, swimming, walking, and golfing are a few of the favorite activities of older adults.


  • Eat fresh. Encourage them to make a commitment to add more fresh fruits and vegetables to their daily snacks and meals.  Encourage them to try to cook from scratch using fresh ingredients as much as possible.


Healthy Aging® Month is a motivation for senior citizens to resolve that it’s not too late to shore up their health, pursue something new, or revive a favorite hobby or activity.  Right at Home, an in-home senior care provider, can also help seniors achieve their goals and live their lives to the fullest.
